Welcome Message

About SAS2024, XIX International Small-Angle Scattering Conference

Every three years, the small-angle scattering community showcases recent advances and documents the wide-ranging impact of the technique on existing and emerging scientific fields through the triennial international small-angle conference series. These community-driven and self-sustained conferences bring together scientists in the field and with researchers from interdisciplinary areas worldwide. The conference generation is well represented by students, post-doctoral researchers, and young and reputed scientists. Conferences are also renowned for the active participation of industrial partners, represented by both instrument manufacturers in the exhibition and industry researchers in the scientific program. Thanks to this broad community involvement, the triennial SAS conference creates a traditional yet unique occasion where new connections and collaborations are forged to grow a thriving SAS international community. The SAS's recent conference history can be traced from this website. An independent, bottom-up assembly of interested SAS practitioners, canSAS (collective action for nomadic Small Angle Scatterers - see cansas.org) aims to promote collaboration and lower the barriers to SAS experiments and data analysis. Since 1999, canSAS has organized regular workshops and small gatherings at the triennial SAS conferences, this time as canSASXIV at SAS2024. In SAS2024, there will be the IUCr Guinier prize awarding ceremony with the IUCr commission on SAS (cSAS) to highlight the mutually beneficial relationship between the international SAS community represented at the triennial SAS meetings and the IUCr since the early 2000s, as narrated in this report

SAS2024 returns this series to Asia (Taipei) after SAS2006 in Kyoto. With the state-of-the-art small-angle scattering capabilities at the 3.0 GeV Taiwan Photon Source and 1.5 GeV Taiwan Light Source, the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC) will host SAS2024, together with the Taiwan Neutron Science Society (TWNSS). The scientific program includes sessions on the following fields: Topics Overview

  • BioSAS
  • Polymers and composites
  • Imaging with SAS and coherent diffraction
  • Magnetic materials
  • Condensed materials
  • Soft matter
  • Colloids, gel, and complex fluids
  • Interfaces and surfaces
  • Kinetics and dynamics
  • Instruments and methodology
  • Modeling and data analysis
  • Industrial applications
  • Special session on semiconductor applications

The TWNSS annual meeting will be held in the same venue with jointly organized scientific programs. A memorial session for Prof. Sow-Hsin Chen (1935–2021), the 2015 Guinier prize winner, will be arranged to reminisce about his lifetime contribution to SAS. A satellite meeting, Cutting-Edge in Soft Matter Science 2024 (CeSMS2024) at Kitakyushu, Japan, is also organized with a regional collective effort to maximize the value of the Asia trip for cross-continent attendees. A one-day school for tutorials and lectures will be held before the conference commencement, with free student access. Students are also encouraged with discounted conference registration fees and limited scholarships sponsored by local and international organizations. (scholarships are also available for postdoctoral fellows) In SAS2024, we will hand over the conference baton to the joint host of ESS and MAX IV for SAS2027 at Lund, Sweden, and give birth to SAS2030 together. To mark down SAS2024, a special issue of the Journal of Applied Crystallography will be published, highlighting the recent research progress contributed by the registered conference participants.

The conference will take place at the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC) in Taipei, Taiwan, from Nov. 3 to 8, 2024. The banquet site will be the Silks Palace within the National Palace Museum site in the suburb of Taipei. Taipei City and its surroundings provide convenient living facilities and a safe environment for participants and travel companions. With open arms and warm regards, we look forward to welcoming you to Taipei for a professional meeting enriched with local cultures in Taiwan's conformable late autumn season.
